How to Enroll in Head Start
or Early Head Start
Step One: Call any one of our centers
- Ronkonkoma (631) 585-2020
- Port Jefferson (631) 476-9698
- Miller Place (631) 509-1979 (Early Head Start only)
Tell the receptionist you are interested in enrolling your child in Head Start or Early Head Start, depending on the age of your child. You will then be transferred to one of our Family Advocates which may require you calling another number. Bilingual Family Advocates are available.
Step Two: During this initial conversation, you will be asked basic information including:
- your child's name and date of birth
- your address
- basic family information such as number of people in the household
- household income
- other important information
Step Three: If it appears you are eligible based on federal guidelines, you will be invited to one of our centers to meet a Family Advocate to complete an application. To make your application process go smoothly, you should bring in the following documentation:
- proof of income
- your child's birth certificate
- medical insurance cards
- any court orders
- anything else as advised by the Family Advocate
Step Four: Once you complete the application you will be in the "child selection" process.
Children are selected as openings become available. We wish we could enroll everyone, but we are only funded for a limited number of children in each age group. Many factors are considered, so if your family situation changes (for example you lose your job, your child is diagnosed with a disability, or you face some kind of family hardship) please call us to keep us up-to-date.
